Geek Cocktails - Pop Science Experiments?

Traditional cocktails are all well and good, but sometimes you need to crank up the flava. Geek chic is all the rage and in this post contributor Jess Hicks takes us deep into nerdom with some geek cocktails that only a mother could love.

In fact some of the geek references are so deep, that I’m going to ride shotgun so that they don’t go over your head… and maybe add a few comments. – Bill

Everyone loves a good cocktail, but the typical Margarita, Manhattan and Mojito can get stale after a while. But if you’re a contemporary nerd of drinking age you’re sure to appreciate these alcoholically experimental geek cocktails. I can pretty much guarantee that you won’t be able to find these anywhere….

Geek Cocktails

Nor would you want to…

The Giggling Yoda

It might look like the Dagobah swamp land, this is one nerd drink sure to turn heads at your May 4th Star Wars party. Among my favorite weird cocktails, you’ll need a Martini glass and a blender for this freaky favorite.

Geek Cocktails - The Giggling YodaIngredients:

  • 1 oz. Vodka
  • 1 Can of Ginger Ale
  • ½ Pear (cored and peeled)
  • 5-6 Green Grapes
  • 2 Tsp Lime Juice
  • 1 Sprig of Mint

Blend, pour, sit back and enjoy the good times at light speed!

I’m not sure if this geeky cocktail will turn heads or stomachs… but if you’re the parent of a young child, you’ll be familiar with bubbly green ooze.

Bill on Making Drunk Videos
I’m not sure if Allison was sober for this video … but by the sound of the party around her and the mostly empty vodka bottles, she was probably hammered.

Sonic the Hedgehog

I remember spending countless hours wasting away collecting as many gold coins as I possibly could. Well now I’ve graduated from childish things to freaky drinks!

Geek Cocktails - Sonic The HedgehogIngredients:

This is intended to be a layered shot, so bring your geek chic to this one by starting with a tall shot glass, adding the Grenadine first, gently add the Mentholmint and topping it with the Blue Curacao.

Maybe it’s me, but I think I’d prefer wasting hours than brain cells on this one…

The Sonic Screwdriver

So if you’re looking for an alternative Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, how about a different kind of geek cocktail with an alternative “sonic” beverage? Inspired by Dr. Who, any contemporary Sci Fi freak will be down with a 10th Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver cocktail:

Geek Cocktails - The Sonic ScrewdriverIngredients:

  • 1 oz. Blue Curacao
  • 1 oz. Blueberry Vodka
  • .5 oz. Captain Morgan
  • Fill Sprite

Be forewarned, this is one nerdy cocktail with multiple variations, so prepare your liver to travel through time and space. You don’t even have to be an extraterrestrial, but it couldn’t hurt.

Bill on the 10th Doctor

If you’re into British science fiction you know that this nerd drink is named for the gadget carried by the main character. I don’t know about you, but as far as I’m concerned the good doctor can keep his tool to himself.

The Portal 2

Whether you’re a fan of complex video game puzzles or not, these nerd drinks are pretty damn cool looking. Created to resemble the two colored portals in the game, Portal 2 cocktails are served up in glass rimmed with colored sugar. These may not help your game but nothing takes the edge off like a little liquid assistance:

Geek Cocktails - The Portal 2Ingredients (BLUE):

  • ½ oz. Blue Curacao
  • ½ oz. Vodka
  • Top with lemonade

Ingredients (ORANGE):

  • ½ oz. Cointreau
  • ½ oz. Rum
  • Top with Orangina

Start by rimming each glass with colored sugar of a contrasting color (learn how to make it here) and then adding each ingredient. Nerds who drink will appreciate the nod toward one of the most popular geek games around.

And if you’re diabetic, have some insulin ready…

Aurora Jungle Juice

Created to resemble the Aurora Borealis, the ingredients of this starwatching geek cocktail will glow under black light. Often created in batches, Aurora Jungle Juice is great as a party punch or to enjoy with friends when dancing the night away.

Geek Cocktails - Aurora Jungle JuiceIngredients:

  • 2 oz. Vodka
  • 4 oz. Tonic Water
  • 1 oz. Roses Mojito Passion (or Pink-Lemonade Concentrate)

Don’t hesitate to adjust the quantities to taste; Roses Mojito Passion isn’t critical, but it’ll give your freaky cocktail a more incandescent look!

Just what I needed… another reason to drink in a dark room.

The Winterfell

After a long cold winter, this drink fit for a king is just what you need to warm up.

Geek Cocktails - The WinterfellIngredients:

  • 1 Bottle Guinness Stout
  • 2 oz. Apple Brandy
  • 1 oz. Amaretto
  • 1 oz. Maple Syrup (preferably grade “B”)

Pour your beer into a glass ? of the way full. Combine brandy, amaretto, and syrup in another glass and pour the mix into your beer.

Bill on the Winterfell

A waste of a perfectly good bottle of Guinness. After seeing this cocktail, I think that the Ironborn should have finished the job when they attacked Winterfell in Game of Thrones.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that if you’re looking for something different, these geek cocktails will fit the bill. No matter where you sit within the nerd spectrum, try one of these to let your freak flag fly.
